Covid-19: Quarantine period now only 10 days, M’sia records 1,229 new cases, four new deaths


Malaysia recorded 1,229 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday (Dec 13), bringing the total number of infections to 83,475. Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in the 24-hour span, four people died from the infection while 1,309 patients recovered. The Health Ministry also detected six new clusters in Labuan, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang. Meanwhile, the quarantine period for overseas travellers has been shortened to 10 days from 14, starting Dec 14. Covid vaccine: India in talks with European firm to set up cold chain


India is stepping up preparation for mass vaccination against Covid-19. With countries like UK starting immunisation, India is working on logistics. The Indian government is in talks with Luxembourg firm to set up vaccine cold-chain. Covid-19 vaccines need to be stored & transported at low temperatures. 3 firms have applied to the Indian government for approval to use vaccines on public. B Medical Systems' officials are in India for discussions with the government. B Medical Systems plans to eventually set up production plant in Gujarat. In Sept 2020, the firm donated equipment to Mumbai for vaccine trials. Watch the full video for more.

Covid vaccine: Foreign diplomats hail India's capability after lab visit


Foreign diplomats posted in India visited vaccine labs in Hyderabad. The Indian govt arranged the visit to show progress in vaccine development. Over 60 envoys visited Bharat Biotech, and Biological E's facilities. The diplomats praised India's vaccine production capabilities. Bharat Biotech has applied for emergency use approval for 'Covaxin'. Biological E's vaccine candidate will soon enter early-stage trials. Bharat Biotech's joint M.D. expressed hope of vaccine availability soon. Suchitra Ella said, “We can't predict the timeline because licensure will come from govt. We hope that Covaxin will be available in first quarter of 2021.”

Who Are Malaysia’s New Poor? The COVID-19 Recession


With rising unemployment, about 5 to 8 per cent more Malaysians could below its new poverty line income, which stands at RM2,208, as a result of the pandemic and the global recession it has triggered. That's as many as 2.4 million more who could become the 'new poor'.

Some who have found themselves suddenly without a job or reduced income stream have found different ways to cope - from adjusting their perspectives, to relying on the charity of others, like Kechara Soup Kitchen in KL.

The Malaysian government also has been giving cash handouts to struggling low-income households, as part of four economic stimulus packages totalling some US$75 billion to support businesses and households. But for some like the NAK Hotel in Sandakan, Sabah - a state that relies heavily on tourism - it's not enough. The hotel,  which employed many staff from the B40 (bottom 40 per cent), has had to shut its doors.

How Lufthansa Prepares To Ship 10 Million Covid Vaccine Doses A Day | Big Business


Countries around the world have begun to approve the most anticipated vaccine of the 21st century — but getting it to 8 billion people is going to be a massive undertaking with many logistical challenges. The different vaccines need to be kept at various cold temperatures, transported to isolated and hard-to-reach areas, and fit onto different-sized planes. And all of that has to happen as the 2020 holiday season begins. The cargo industry has already been overwhelmed this year by many people shopping from home, leading to shipping surges and late packages. There will likely be a fight for space between vaccines, Amazon packages, furniture, cars, and other cargo. Lufthansa Cargo recently upgraded its Chicago O'Hare facility to be able to handle a large amount of pharmaceutical shipments. We went inside to see how the team is getting ready to ship up to 10 million vaccine doses a day.
